Ocean County Press Release
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE OCEAN COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES DURING THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

Please be advised that the Ocean County Board of Social Services will be open to the public beginning on Monday, September 14, 2020.

Ensuring you receive your benefits during this ongoing coronavirus concern is a top priority, so in an effort to make it easier for you to apply or receive your benefits, a number of temporary changes have been put in place regarding social services that are administered here at the Ocean County Board of Social Services.

We encourage our county residents to continue to utilize our online application systems whenever possible. Anyone wishing to do so can apply for SNAP food assistance or cash assistance under the Work First New Jersey program online at NJHelps.org. We will continue to conduct interviews and other business by phone, and we can also be contacted via mail, fax and email (please see below). You do not need to come into the office to apply for, renew or provide documentation for benefits.

If you need emergency housing assistance, e.g. temporary shelter, back rent, back utilities, security deposit, or first month's rent, in lieu of applying in person, you can also call our main number at (732) 349-1500 and ask the operator for the Special Response Unit.

Business hours for all Board of Social Services locations will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday until further notice. The Board of Social Services extended hours that usually occur on Tuesdays in Building 3 until 6:30 p.m. continue to be temporarily suspended.

For the safety and health of those who visit our Toms River, Lakewood and Manahawkin locations, our waiting areas will have limited capacity in order to comply with the CDC guidelines. Masks and social distancing are required. Masks must be worn at all times by all who enter our buildings. To help us adhere to these guidelines, you may be asked to wait outside to be called, make an appointment, or be contacted by phone as necessary. Additionally, if you are accompanying someone and it is not necessary for you to be present, you will be asked to wait outside, as space is limited. Please remember that if you are sick, experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 or are required to quarantine, do not come to the Agency; instead, contact us at 732-349-1500 so we may assist you. We thank you and appreciate your cooperation during these challenging times.

Program Information and Updates:

Work First New Jersey cash assistance clients who are due for their case to be reviewed in September will automatically get a 60-day extension. You do not need to come into the office. Further waivers of the WFNJ redetermination process are to be determined.

If you are a SNAP food assistance or a Work First New Jersey cash assistance client, you are not required to attend your work activity, unless you want to, and the program is operating. This includes people who are applying for Work First New Jersey General Assistance and are in a work activity for 28 days while their application is being reviewed. No penalty will be assessed to you if you do not attend your work activity.

Attention SNAP recipients: If your case is due to be recertified in September and you were unable to get your paperwork in or complete your interview, your case will not be closed. You will receive your benefits on the usual day. Your case will be recertified at some point in the future, once this public health crisis has settled. In the meantime, you will continue to receive SNAP benefits. Further waivers to the SNAP recertification process are to be determined.

Attention Medicaid Recipients: Medicaid cases will remain open until further notice. Cases will only be closed for deceased individuals, those who voluntarily withdraw and those who move out of state. Clients who are no longer eligible for any other reason will receive termination letters when case closures resume. Clients should continue to submit redetermination applications when sent a redetermination packet by the Board.
